While we’re constantly improving our lifestyles, a new year (and a new decade!) always calls for resolutions. What 2020 goals does the Lithium team have for improving our fashion and beauty lives? Find out below!
- Self-Care
“But I’m not talking about Netflix and bath bombs. When I say self-care, I mean the grueling tasks that aren’t as easy as putting on a face mask and lighting a candle. I want to make myself more put-together at school and at my job. I want to drink more water, always remember to wipe off my makeup, adopt a steady skincare routine, and take more time washing my hair.”
– Taylor Wang, Artist
“My primary beauty resolution is to stick with a new skincare routine. The acne I battled with during my adolescence has left my skin discolored, scarred, and difficult to heal, making me feel discouraged and self-conscious. I’m crossing my fingers that, with a consistent skincare routine, I’ll continue to see the improvement I’ve waited so long for.”
– Avery Matteo, Writer
“After constant lightheadedness and dry skin, I realized that water is extremely imperative to one’s health. Fenty Beauty highlighter may give you that ‘sunkissed’ glow, but drinking water makes sure that glow stays and SHINES. Drinking water is the biggest resolution I have this year… Whether it be buying a Hydro Flask or those water bottles with fun notes that remind you to drink to a certain level (I prefer Zephyrhills mini water bottles, but maybe that’s just me), any way to make sure your body is getting hydrated is a beauty resolution well worked on!”
– Otufa Noor, Writer
“I’m going to stop wearing three-year-old foundation and two-year-old eyeshadow because my roommate just informed me that isn’t great for my skin. (Who knew?!)”
– Olivia Ferrucci, EIC
2. Sustainability
“My fashion resolution for the year is to steer away from fast fashion. I’m making a commitment to buy secondhand clothing whenever possible. I’m very excited to sift through Depop listings and explore local thrift stores more often!”
– Avery Matteo, Writer
“Having moved four times in the last two years, I’ve come to realize that one thing is for certain: I have a lot of clothes. That’s why my fashion resolution is to be less wasteful in my [clothing purchases]—from researching and buying from ethical brands to making sure the clothes you give away go to good causes. For me, I’m resolving to not purchase anything new until I’ve sold and donated what I don’t wear.”
– Callie Bri Keels, Photographer
“In 2020 I hope to, like many, alter my purchasing habits in a more sustainable way. I don’t tend to throw away clothes often, but I want to focus on things like quality and ethics as I make my purchases this year, giving my business to companies who have morally just practices and use well-sourced materials. In the same vein, I’ll be careful about skincare and makeup I buy—picking vegan/vegetarian, cruelty-free, and ethically sourced products. I already tend to be selective about what I put on my skin, but this year I’ll be even more conscious. There are also a few lifetime purchases I hope to make, including some of my favourite old Céline pieces.”
– Jenna Kalishman, Fashion and Beauty Editor
“One of my biggest fashion resolutions for the year, which I’m sure many others my age share, is to be a more conscious consumer and source my clothes sustainably whenever I can. I hope to avoid fast fashion and purchase from small businesses, artists, and ethical feminist brands in 2020!”
– Sami Harris, Writer
“In 2020, I’m going to actually start shopping sustainably.”
– Olivia Ferrucci, Editor-in-Chief
3. Creativity!
“My fashion resolution for this year is to get comfortable with changing my style and appearance. Last year, I felt stuck in my body and my style; living in a pretty conservative area, I was afraid of what people might think if I looked ‘too gay’ or my shorts were too short. I’ve slowly been dismantling that restrictive mindset; on New Year’s Eve, I decided to dye my hair blue, and I wore four-inch rainbow platforms on my first day back at school. I don’t want to limit myself to one aesthetic or another person’s perception of me. This year, I’m going around the color wheel with my hair and living my best witchy art-ho life.”
– MJ Brown, Writer
“I’m taking on the challenge of living through my first NYC winter by performing a practice in layering. How many pairs of pants can I wear at once? Can I sandwich a denim jacket between two sweaters and top that with a puffer coat? Can I pull off a crewneck, turtleneck, and peter-pan collar all at once? 2020 me is about to find out.”
– Karen Cheng, Associate Fashion and Beauty Editor
“More big pants and little shirts FTW.”
– Olivia Ferrucci, Editor-in-Chief
“As someone that has always been self-conscious, I found it very easy to hide my body. While I’ve been content with my style, this year I want to step it up even more. I’ve thrifted so many amazing pieces that I would love to [wear more]. My goal this year is to experiment and have fun with my fashion, and step up my accessory game too! From now on, I want to make every day my personal fashion week.”
– Jada Moore, Writer
“Another huge fashion resolution I have is to use fashion as a form of art and self-expression more than I ever have before and showcase my eclectic personality through the outfits I wear and my overall fashion sense.”
– Sami Harris, Writer
