Staycation

I was invited by Ali and Steph into their staycation home of two weeks to observe and capture the tranquility of their pseudo-holiday.

Ali and I had been planning a collaboration in which we’d capture a side of her personality through photos. Despite having only known her for a small amount of time, I could tell her partner was going to enhance the outcome of a photoshoot.

Ali and Steph have a familiarity about them—one feels immediately comfortable in their presence. Between poses and intentionally arranged settings was a candidness that superseded all desired shots.

Within the performative nature of a photo series, a story is captured. Really, it’s the unscripted moments that truly unearth what lies beneath. It’s impossible to adequately capture the essence of what keeps that fire burning in a loving, exciting relationship—but nonetheless, the moments documented here really speak to their togetherness and affection.

Lulkbudia (referred to as Ali) is a Miriwoong/Gadjeroong woman whose mob is from the Pilbara/ Kimberley regions in Western Australia. Ali studies psychology and also works at a Uni on Whadjuk Country (Perth, W.A). Steph has an Italian family background and practices Law on Whadjuk Country.
